Ahmad Shahram Nasiri’s story is a remarkable example of how determination, education, and service can transform lives. Arriving in Sacramento as a refugee from Afghanistan, Ahmad and his family sought safety, opportunity, and a chance to build a brighter future. Like many newcomers, he faced significant challenges, including the trauma of leaving his home country, separation from loved ones, and the task of adapting to an unfamiliar language and culture. Yet through every obstacle, Ahmad remained focused on the possibilities that education could provide.
When Ahmad enrolled at Twin Rivers Adult School, he began in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Already fluent in two languages, he embraced the challenge of learning English as his third. Through dedication and perseverance, he rapidly progressed and became dual enrolled in the High School Completion Program. His hard work culminated in earning his high school diploma, a milestone that opened new opportunities and reflected his unwavering commitment to success.
Beyond his own achievements, Ahmad became a leader within the school community. He frequently served as an interpreter, helping fellow students overcome language barriers and feel welcomed and supported. His kindness, leadership, and willingness to give back earned him recognition as the school’s Pledge of Allegiance presenter, a proud symbol of his growth, confidence, and sense of belonging.
Adult education also created a pathway to meaningful employment. Ahmad was hired as a Paraeducator Specialist at Twin Rivers Adult School, where he supported students facing challenges similar to those he once experienced. His exceptional work ethic and commitment to service led to a promotion as a Data Management Assistant.
Today, Ahmad continues to pursue his dreams after being accepted to American River College, where he plans to study toward becoming a school counselor. His journey demonstrates the extraordinary power of education to build confidence, create opportunities, and inspire others. As a student, employee, mentor, and future educator, Ahmad embodies resilience, leadership, and the belief that with determination and support, anything is possible.
