Shannon Leonard
Norwalk-La Mirada Adult School
Nominated in 2026
Shannon Leonard’s journey is a remarkable story of resilience, determination, and personal growth. Despite facing significant challenges with severe social anxiety, she has transformed her educational experience and become an inspiration to those around her.
Shannon’s struggles began after a panic attack during swim practice in middle school. The experience triggered intense social anxiety, leading to depression, insomnia, missed classes, and difficulty participating in school. Over the years, she attended multiple educational settings, including a public high school, military academy, private school, and two online schools. Unfortunately, her anxiety prevented her from finding success in those environments, and she eventually withdrew from each one.
Everything changed in the fall of 2024 when her mother encouraged her to enroll at Norwalk-La Mirada Adult School (NLMAS). Although starting over felt intimidating, Shannon quickly discovered she could excel in the supportive adult education environment. Her success in her first Language Arts class gave her the confidence to continue, and she soon began achieving at a level she had never imagined.
Since enrolling, Shannon has earned six Extraordinary Student Awards in English Language Arts, completed multiple math, history, economics, and government courses with outstanding grades, and successfully enrolled in college classes including College Algebra, American Sign Language, Geology, Political Science, English, and Communication. She is also on track to graduate with her high school diploma in June 2026.
Beyond academics, Shannon has become a leader and mentor. She regularly helps classmates during and after class, tutors students in mathematics, and generously supports others in need. When she learned a classmate lacked a bed, she and her family quietly stepped in to help. Her kindness and compassion have left a lasting impact on her school community.
Shannon has also achieved important personal milestones, including earning her driver’s license and becoming more independent. Today, she is a confident student, a respected leader, and a role model for her peers. Inspired by her father, she plans to pursue a career as a Chief Financial Officer.
Shannon’s story demonstrates that challenges do not define a person. She finds inspiration in the bible verses Jeremiah 1:7-8, giving her the confidence to overcome and that God is always with her. Through faith, courage, perseverance, and the support of adult education, she has transformed obstacles into opportunities and built a future filled with promise and purpose.
