Monica Chumacero’s journey is a beautiful example of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of education. When Monica left Mexico to begin a new life in the United States, she faced tremendous challenges. She had to leave behind her parents, her grandmother, her career as an architect, and the familiar life she loved. Arriving in a new country brought uncertainty, language barriers, and cultural differences that often left her feeling isolated and discouraged.

Determined to build a better future, Monica enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at Harbor Occupational Center in San Pedro. There, she found much more than an opportunity to learn English. She discovered friendship, encouragement, and a supportive community that helped her regain confidence in herself and her abilities.

As her English skills improved, Monica began pursuing a lifelong passion for design in a new and creative way. She launched her own home-based floral design business, Make It Flowers, creating beautiful floral arrangements and sharing her work through social media. What started as a small business soon grew into new opportunities, including freelance design work with local florists and participation in community events throughout San Pedro.

Monica's growth extended beyond entrepreneurship. As she advanced through the ESL program, she volunteered as a student council representative, helping organize school events and supporting fellow students. Through presentations and community involvement, she became increasingly confident communicating in English and advocating for herself and others.

Today, Monica proudly displays her floral designs at local events, including the First Thursday San Pedro Art Walk, and continues to expand her business with the support of family, friends, and the local Chamber of Commerce. She is currently enrolled in Level 6 ESL and plans to complete the program in 2026 before pursuing her High School Diploma.

Monica’s story demonstrates that courage, perseverance, and education can help turn uncertainty into opportunity. Through hard work and determination, she has created a thriving new life, proving that even after profound change, it is possible to bloom and flourish in new and unexpected ways.
